Jamey Helsman (Judas)
In the fall of 1994, college freshman baseball player, I auditioned for Midnight Productions’ Jesus Christ Superstar in the community room of the Oxford Valley Mall—which, if you’ve ever been there, is exactly as glamorous as it sounds. What I didn’t know then was that one audition would bring me into a family that’s been stuck with me for over 30 years. Somewhere along the way, castmates turned into lifelong friends… and now you’re all basically relatives whether you like it or not. A lot of us grew up on the Keswick stage—learning our notes, missing our cues, and pretending we knew what we were doing. We’ve shared comedy, tragedy, and a whole lot of “what just happened?” moments. For me, nothing tops getting to share that stage with my two daughters, Smooch and Bubba. That was pretty special. We did try to get my son E up there too… but he made the decision to stay in the audience and judge us from a safe distance. I love you three more than anything. For the last 20-some years, I’ve been down in North Carolina—same sales job since 2007, coaching high school baseball since 2015. Every now and then my two passions collide, and they let me sing the National Anthem… which either inspires a crowd or makes them wish the game would start sooner. A huge thank you to my family, extended family, and friends for supporting this show all these years. Seriously, the fact that you keep coming back means either you love us… or you just don’t know how to say no. To Newt and Alan—I don’t know how you’ve put up with me this long, but at this point, I think it’s legally binding. I love you guys. To Mom—none of this happens without you. Thank you for being my rock, my biggest supporter, and probably my longest-running fan. And to Aunt Peggy—thanks for the 20 bucks and the gummy bears. Honestly, still one of the best sponsorship deals I’ve ever had. .
